The Many Surprising Benefits of Natural Skincare Products

Were you aware that the global cosmetics industry is currently valued at over $380 billion dollars (1)? While science has come a long way, artificial ingredients may actually cause more harm than good. Natural skincare products are a popular trend, and for good reason.

Changing Industry Standards

First and foremost, it is important to realise that the cosmetics industry itself has become much more stringent in relation to the ingredients contained within specific products. We are not only referring to chemicals in this sense. Consumers also need to be certain that products claiming to be “organic” meet certain criteria.

For instance, Sophim is a supplier of sustainable and organic cosmetic products. They have been approved by a set of certifications known as COSMOS (COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard). Users can therefore rest assured in the knowledge that the associated cosmetics meet industry requirements in order to be labelled as “organic”. The main point here is that simply claiming to offer organic solutions is of little value if this promise is not independently verified.

The Movement Away From Artificial Skincare Ingredients

So, why have many consumers chosen to adopt natural solutions for their skincare needs? One major reason involves the possible side effects associated with chemicals. These are collectively known by the rather complicated term “Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)”. Without delving into too much detail, these materials tend to break down rather slowly when compared to all-natural alternatives. Some scientists also feel that they may pose long-term health risks, such as (2):

  •  Fertility issues
  •  Some types of cancer
  •  Damage to the liver
  •  Thyroid disease
  •  Obesity

Note that research is still ongoing, and yet, a growing number of consumers are simply becoming more aware of the risks that specific chemicals may pose. Either way, there is little doubt that all-natural alternatives are here to stay.

Popular Organic Substances

The good news is that many natural substances are readily available, and in some cases, cheaper than their artificial alternatives. Common examples include coconut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera, tea tree oil, and vitamin C. Some of these are topical while others (such as green tea) represent healthy drinks that offer additional benefits. Others are lesser known, and yet, the advantages are just as profound. Examples include squalene (a natural emollient), vegetable waxes, and organic alternatives to traditional substances such as petroleum jelly.

So, why are all-natural ingredients often preferred? One practical issue involves the fact that the user is much less likely to develop an allergic reaction; an obvious concern for those with sensitive skin. Another observation is associated with the production processes themselves. Organic ingredients are much more environmentally friendly when compared to chemical substances. In other words, suppliers are able to dramatically reduce their overall carbon footprints; an important attribute in terms of long-term sustainability, and combating the ongoing effects of climate change.

Back To The Basics

Let us also remember that natural skincare products are certainly nothing new. For instance, soothing flowers such as chamomile and rose have been used for millennia. Science has simply begun to better understand the potential benefits that they have to offer. When it comes to natural skincare products, beauty is indeed more than skin deep!
